A hand-painted piece will tell you how it was made, if you know where to look. Brushstrokes change width as the brush runs dry, so two plates from one pattern never match exactly in the placing of a leaf or the weight of an outline. Transfers and decals do not behave that way. Turn a piece over as well: many Caltagirone workshops mark the base, though an unmarked piece is a question rather than a verdict, since older work was often left unsigned.

We write these pages from the workshop side. Our painters know which shortcuts change a surface and which do not, and that is the standard used here: brushwork, glaze, marks, and what a repeated shape actually tells you. Articles on teste di moro, pigne and vintage pieces will follow.
